LINEAR MOTION

OBJECTIVE
1.       To analyze  linear motion of a moving object
2.       To determine displacement, velocity and acceleration of a linear motion

INFERENCE
1.       Linear motion is a motion along a straight line.
2.       Velocity is uniform when acceleration is zero and non-uniform when acceleration is non zero.

HYPOTHESIS
1.       Velocity is speed in a given direction.
2.       Acceleration is the increase of velocity over a period of time.
3.       Deceleration is the decrease of velocity over a period of time.

APPARATUS

Ticker timer                           -1
Carbonized ticker tape           -1
Runway                                   -1
power supply                          -1
Trolley                                    -1
Jumper wire                           -2
Ruler                                       -1
Lab jack/clamp                       -1
Cellophane tape

PROCEDURES
1.       The trolley runway is compensated for friction by raising one end until the trolley runs down with uniform velocity when given a light push.
2.       The runway is inclined about 1m □2m, so that the trolley will roll down freely from rest without any applied force.
3.       Attach the ticker tape to the trolley using cellophane tape.
4.       Switch on the ticker timer and release the trolley freely.
5.       The ticker-tape obtained is cut into eleven 10-ticks strips.
6.       The 10-ticks strips are pasted side by side to form a ticker-tape chart.

ANALYSING THE DATA

10-dots = 1 strip
Figure 2

1.                 Mark and number every 10 dot as figure 2.
2.                 Cut and paste ticker tape into 10-dot strips on the graph paper as Figure 3.

Note :

1.     Frequency of ticker-timer is 50Hz. Therefore, 1 dot or 1 unit time represents 1/50 seconds or 0.02 second.
2.     Time for 10 dots = 10 dots x 0.02 seconds = 0.2 seconds

RESULT

1
Number of 10-dot strips
6
2
Total time, t total = number of strips x 0.2

S
3
Total displacement of the trolley

M
4
Average velocity of the trolley

v= ————————

m/s
5
                    Acceleration of the trolley
a. Initial velocity

u= ———————————

m/s

b. Final velocity

v= ——————————

m/s

c. Time for acceleration, t
( number of strips – 1) x (time for 10 dots)

s
d. Acceleration

a = ————

m/s ²
6
Average velocity

V average = ———

m/s

QUESTION

1.     Is there any difference in the value of average velocity between Result 4 and 6?

Yes, there is are difference. In result 4 the velocity is lower then result 6. this is because the velocity in result 6 is greather than result 4.

CONCLUSION

The average of velocity is higher when the velocity of the moving trolly  along the straight line is increase.
